Electrical Saftely Checklist

MONTHLY SAFETY CHECKS 

□ Test all RCD (Residual Current Device) switches by pressing the test button

□ Check all plug sockets for scorch marks, cracks, or loose fittings

□ Inspect visible cables for damage, wear, or exposed wiring 

□ Ensure outdoor electrical equipment is weatherproof and secure

□ Test smoke alarm batteries and functionality 

QUARTERLY INSPECTIONS 

□ Check your consumer unit (fuse box) for any signs of burning or damage

□ Inspect extension leads for wear - replace if damaged 

□ Test GFCI outlets in bathrooms and kitchens 

□ Check outdoor lighting and security systems 

□ Verify emergency lighting is working properly 

ANNUAL PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS 

□ EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) - Required every 5 years for homes, 1-5 years for rental properties 

□ PAT Testing for portable appliances (especially important for landlords)

□ Professional inspection of smart home systems and EV chargers

□ Comprehensive electrical safety assessment 

WARNING SIGNS - CALL A PROFESSIONAL IMMEDIATELY 

⚠️ Frequent circuit breaker trips or blown fuses 

⚠️ Flickering or dimming lights 

⚠️ Burning smells from outlets or switches 

⚠️ Mild electric shocks from appliances 

⚠️ Warm or hot switch plates and outlets 

⚠️ Sparks when plugging/unplugging devices 

⚠️ Buzzing or crackling sounds from electrical panels 

SAFETY DO'S AND DON'TS 

 DO: 

• Turn off power at the main breaker before any electrical work • Use surge protectors for valuable electronics 

• Keep electrical appliances away from water 

• Replace damaged cords immediately 

• Use the correct wattage bulbs for fixtures

• Install GFCI outlets in wet areas 

 DON'T: 

• Overload circuits with too many devices 

• Use damaged electrical equipment 

• Touch electrical appliances with wet hands 

• Ignore electrical problems - they won't fix themselves • Attempt major electrical repairs yourself 

• Use extension cords as permanent solutions
